Who he is

The interesting thing about Alicorn is that he withholds. A blessing that arrives on request is a transaction; his arrive only to confirm something already true. He comes down out of the mountains to a stable that has kept the same traditions for a very long time, and he does not correct those traditions, does not argue with them, does not offer an alternative. He watches which bonds have something worth growing, and he waits.

It would be faster to simply fix what is broken in them. He refuses on principle, because a bond repaired by an outsider is not a bond, it is a repair. So he gives space instead, and confidence, and very little explanation, which is its own kind of demand.

There is something almost severe in how gentle he is. He never raises the stakes and never lowers them either. What he offers is not comfort. It is the harder gift of being believed in before you have earned it, by someone who will not do the earning for you.
