Darkhound is who I am in The Run. I've just never had a reason to be anyone else outside it.

- Bram

Who he is

Bram is eighteen and has trained for The Run since he was old enough to walk it, which means the arena has had his entire life to shape him and no competition from anything else. Every year brought another lesson, another expectation, another measure of the champion he might become. By the time his village gave him the title, there was very little of Bram that had been asked to exist without it.

Darkhound is the simpler person to be. That name asks for strength and nothing further: no history, no expectations, no obligation to be good company. Bram, the actual name, arrives attached to a village that has just called him its champion and to whatever a person is supposed to become after that. He does not know. He has not had reason to find out.

His discipline is not grim, and treating preparation as a form of respect is not the same as treating it as a chore. The problem is that the same discipline has taught him to read closeness as a dulling agent, something that costs edge, so he keeps people at a measured distance and calls it focus. Winning matters because it is the one outcome he has ever been able to control, which is a different thing from wanting glory, and a lonelier one.

Rivals

Five villages send their chosen to The Run. For Bram and Rune, coming second was never part of the plan. Bram has trained for this since he was old enough to understand what winning meant. In the arena, he is Darkhound, disciplined, relentless and determined to leave no room for anything that might dull his edge. Rune arrives at it from the opposite direction. Instinctive, brash and far too pleased with himself, he knows exactly how to get beneath Bram's skin, and seems to enjoy doing it. Bram takes the Chase. Rune takes the Hold. With one trial remaining, neither is willing to give an inch. But somewhere between trying to outthink each other and refusing to look away, the rivalry begins to feel like something neither of them trained for.
