People keep asking how I feel about it. I don't understand the question. It was decided a long time ago.

- Ivy

Who she is

The temptation is to read Ivy as cold, and it misses her. She is not indifferent to Aster. She has never once considered that the pairing might require anything of her, because it was settled long before either of them had a view about it, and settled things do not need work.

Nobody ever taught Ivy to earn something she was told was already hers. Outside that certainty she is confident, capable and genuinely well liked in the stable, which makes the problem harder to see. She is not entitled to everything. She is entitled to this one thing, completely, because everyone around her spent years teaching her that she was.

What it produces is a bond with nothing inside it. She extends very little warmth toward Aster specifically and cannot see why she would need to. When people ask how she feels about the arrangement, the question does not land, because feeling was never something the arrangement asked of her.

Bound, Not Broken

Aster's future has already been decided. Complete the coming-of-age ritual, accept Ivy as his lifelong partner and take his place in a tradition generations before him have followed without question. Instead, he runs. Away from Windmane, Aster finds Emberley Stable and Hazel, a mare who seems to belong to no expectations but her own. She is independent, unpredictable and unwilling to make herself easier for him to understand. Nothing about her offers the certainty Aster has known his entire life, and that is exactly what draws him closer. Then Ivy comes to bring him home, and with her comes everything Aster left behind: familiarity, belonging and a future he knows could make him happy. Hazel offers no such promises. Caught between the life chosen for him and one whose ending he cannot know, Aster must decide how much certainty is worth when the price is never knowing what he might have chosen for himself.
