Duty was never a burden. It was just the only thing I let myself want.

- Koda

Who he is

Koda's line is not a complaint about duty. It is an admission about appetite. He was raised in the forest village and trained from childhood to protect it, and he has never questioned the role, which sounds like contentment until you notice he is describing a decision about what he was permitted to want at all.

Everything else got rationed. He is not cold. The compassion is real and the village has years of evidence for it, but he treats softness as a limited supply and spends it accordingly, while order, competence and follow-through are the things he can give without depleting anything.

What complicates him is Reyn, a wandering fox whose unpredictability is precisely the quality Koda has spent his life declining to develop. He has little patience for recklessness. He also privately admires the nerve behind it, which is an awkward position for someone built on not wanting things. Discipline that has never been tested by desire is not really discipline yet. It is a habit nobody has questioned.

Untamed

Koda has spent years making himself exactly what Thistledown needs. The village sleeps because he does not, and he has little patience for anything that threatens the order he has built around himself. Then Reyn arrives. The wandering fox has no roots, no plans to grow any and an infuriating talent for getting under Koda's skin. But when something she takes from a forbidden part of the forest draws a creature toward Thistledown, getting rid of Reyn is no longer an option. To protect the village, Koda must take her back into the forest and undo what she started. Days alone together should test his patience. Instead, they begin testing walls he has spent a lifetime building. The deeper they go, the more they have to rely on each other. And Koda is beginning to wonder which is more dangerous: what follows them through the forest, or what Reyn might leave behind.
