The line isn't cruelty. It's the only thing standing between them and a grief they don't yet know to fear.

- Moros

Who he is

Moros is not a villain who has told himself a story. He is a believer, and the difference is the entire character. The Sea Code separates deep-sea creatures from land-dwellers, and he enforces it without flexibility because he is convinced the boundary is the last real kindness available.

Wanting what lies above the water can only end one way. Better to stop the wanting than to spend a life mourning it. He holds that absolutely, including the part where holding it costs him any chance of being understood, and he has accepted the cost without asking anyone to notice.

The sharpest fact about him is comparative. The same storm-battered water and the same isolation produced Tendrul, who turned toward connection. Moros turned toward control. Nothing external separates those outcomes, which makes his conviction a choice he keeps making rather than a condition he was handed. He is rigid, humorless and immovable. He does not enjoy the role. He has simply never once entertained the possibility that it is the wrong one.

Voice Beneath the Tide

Relentless storms drive Tendrul from the open sea and into the calm waters of a secluded cove. Hidden beneath the waves, he finds something he has spent much of his life avoiding: someone who might notice him. Wren returns to the shoreline each evening. At first, Tendrul only watches. Then a few words across the water become conversations, and conversations become a friendship neither expected. She knows his voice, his thoughts and the parts of himself he has dared to share. She does not know what waits beneath the surface. When Moros discovers their friendship, the old Sea Code leaves no room for compromise. Land and sea are meant to remain apart, and Moros is determined to protect that boundary before either of them pays the price for crossing it. Tendrul can retreat beneath the waves and remain the voice Wren trusts, or risk being seen as everything he fears she will see.
