Rune

Named for his marking/ROON/

Everyone remembers the mark before they remember my name. Fine by me. Let them underestimate the name.

- Rune

Who he is

Rune has been named for a marking since childhood, a rune-colored patch over one eye, and he worked out early that he could put it to use. People arrive at him with an impression already formed. He would rather they arrive wrong.

Where Bram is discipline, Rune is instinct. Opponents reveal themselves in movement, terrain reveals itself underfoot, and he has spent years learning not to second-guess what he notices. He is proud, a little brash, and enjoys getting under someone's skin nearly as much as beating them, especially when irritation makes them easier to read.

The swagger is not the whole of it. He has real respect for anyone who can actually match him, and at eighteen, in his first year as his village's champion, he meets Bram and finds someone he cannot easily read. For a competitor who wins on instinct, an opponent he cannot get a feel for is a more interesting problem than losing.

Rivals

Five villages send their chosen to The Run. For Bram and Rune, coming second was never part of the plan. Bram has trained for this since he was old enough to understand what winning meant. In the arena, he is Darkhound, disciplined, relentless and determined to leave no room for anything that might dull his edge. Rune arrives at it from the opposite direction. Instinctive, brash and far too pleased with himself, he knows exactly how to get beneath Bram's skin, and seems to enjoy doing it. Bram takes the Chase. Rune takes the Hold. With one trial remaining, neither is willing to give an inch. But somewhere between trying to outthink each other and refusing to look away, the rivalry begins to feel like something neither of them trained for.
