Who she is

Sera is easy company. She is warm without hurry, content to let a silence sit rather than fill it, and rarely asks for more than she is offered. On the road she makes herself useful when there is work to do and unobtrusive when there is not. Most people find themselves comfortable around her before they have thought much about why.

She notices a great deal and never makes a show of it. She also has a habit of turning up at exactly the right moment with no obvious account of how, which reads as luck until it has happened often enough. Kael, who explains himself to nobody, is never pressed by her for answers, which is presumably why he keeps her.

There is a stillness to her that is difficult to place. It reads less as mystery than as an unusual difficulty in unsettling her. She does not appear to want anything from the road, which on a journey where everyone else is chasing something makes her the only one on it who is simply traveling.

The Stone Kin

To the rest of the realm, the dragons of the Petrified Court are statues. Kael knows better. His kin broke the realm's oldest laws, and Veyrun's judgment has held them in stone ever since. The sentence is not permanent, but neither forgiveness nor pleading will lift it. Their debt must be repaid in full. Kael has spent centuries refusing to accept that their story ends there. His search takes him toward the four corners of the realm, following the only path that might restore those he has never abandoned. Along the way, he finds unexpected company in Sera, an unassuming traveler content to share the road without asking for more than Kael is willing to give. But old judgments are not easily undone, and Veyrun has no interest in whether Kael believes his cause is just. To bring his kin back, Kael will have to answer a debt centuries in the making, whatever its repayment demands of him.
