It didn't move like something that wanted to kill us. It moved like something that already knew it would.

- survivor account

Who it is

The survivor's line is precise about the wrong thing, which is what makes it useful. It does not describe what Kryptid looks like, because nobody can. It has never been seen in full, only in fragments: metal-looking scales, a coil, a mouth at the end of it, and no confirmation from anyone close enough to say whether that coil is one long tentacle or many.

What the account does describe is the absence of effort. A predator that wants something can be read, negotiated with, occasionally outlasted. Kryptid does not want. Noxen built it and sent it out from The Veil with a purpose, and it carries that purpose without rage or hunger or hesitation, dismantling what stands in its way rather than overpowering it, because taking a thing apart is more efficient and efficiency is the whole of its intelligence.

Koryn and Lyra have crossed its path beyond known space. It shares an origin with Larval, which is the only real evidence that what Noxen makes and what it becomes are separable at all.

Dark Crossing

Koryn and Lyra have left Neonfall far behind. Following the signal that first brought them together has taken them beyond Fryya's explored space, where there are no Central Forces to call, no Halcyon influence to rely on and no map to tell them what waits ahead. Then something gets aboard their ship. It moves where nothing should fit, snaking behind walls and through the narrow spaces between decks. They catch only pieces of it when it breaks through, glimpses of something too large for the ship around it, before it disappears back inside. And wherever it goes, their ship comes apart. Koryn was trained to assess threats before they became dangerous. This time, he cannot even understand what he is fighting. As vital systems fail, every decision leaves him and Lyra with fewer options than the last. The signal is still calling from somewhere ahead. But something aboard their ship seems determined to make sure they never reach it.
