Everyone I grew up with sees a world worth protecting. I only ever saw who it was protected from.

- Lyra

Who she is

Lyra was raised at the very top of Fryya's corporate order, with every material advantage it affords and almost no illusion about what that advantage costs the people underneath it. Both things are true at once and she has never resolved them.

What that produced is a particular kind of quiet. She is sharp and observant and has spent most of her life saying less than she thinks, because her position makes even mild dissent something people notice and remember. She is not reckless. She is also not obedient. She draws her own conclusions and keeps them until she decides they are worth acting on.

Underneath the composure is real discomfort with the world she was born into, and no obvious way to reconcile that with being from it. Koryn's life could hardly be less like hers, and he was trained by the same system she was raised inside. They are looking at one machine from opposite ends of it.

Ghost Signal

Neonfall is a city built on control. Beneath its towers and rain-soaked streets, the Fryyan Central Forces hunt those who threaten the order holding it together. Koryn is one of their best. When Lyra, daughter of the owner of Halcyon Corp, is taken by the rebels Koryn has spent years hunting, her disappearance becomes too sensitive for an ordinary investigation. Halcyon's influence reaches across Fryya, and Koryn knows the people who took her better than almost anyone. His orders are simple: find Lyra and bring her home. But the deeper Koryn follows their trail through Neonfall, the harder it becomes to separate what he has been taught from what he can see for himself. Lyra has spent her life at the top of the system he serves, yet she has questions of her own about what that system demands from everyone beneath it. Finding her was supposed to be the difficult part. What Koryn discovers along the way may be far harder to bring home.

The Quiet Life

Years beyond the edge of known space, Koryn has finally built a life that belongs to him. There are fields to work, a farm to tend and Lyra beside him. After everything it took to get here, Koryn has found something he never expected to have. Peace. Then a ship from Fryya arrives. Its passengers bring Lyra the first connection to home she has seen in years, but their journey has left them without enough fuel to return. Koryn knows where they might find what they need, forcing him to leave the quiet life he fought for and help the very people who could take Lyra away from it. As they search together, old connections resurface and Koryn begins to understand that Fryya may hold something for Lyra that it no longer holds for him. Getting the ship home means giving Lyra a choice. Koryn just doesn't know what she will choose.

Dark Crossing

Koryn and Lyra have left Neonfall far behind. Following the signal that first brought them together has taken them beyond Fryya's explored space, where there are no Central Forces to call, no Halcyon influence to rely on and no map to tell them what waits ahead. Then something gets aboard their ship. It moves where nothing should fit, snaking behind walls and through the narrow spaces between decks. They catch only pieces of it when it breaks through, glimpses of something too large for the ship around it, before it disappears back inside. And wherever it goes, their ship comes apart. Koryn was trained to assess threats before they became dangerous. This time, he cannot even understand what he is fighting. As vital systems fail, every decision leaves him and Lyra with fewer options than the last. The signal is still calling from somewhere ahead. But something aboard their ship seems determined to make sure they never reach it.
