Kindness isn't a bet I'm placing on you. It's just who I am, whether you deserve it or not.

- Wisp

Who she is

She moves through the forest with an openness that some people read as recklessness and others find quietly disarming. Wisp helps whoever needs helping, more or less as a reflex, and rarely stops to work out whether it is convenient or sensible or safe.

It would be easy to call that naive. It is not. Somewhere along the way she made a decision about the alternative, about treating every stranger as a threat until proven otherwise, and concluded it was not a trade she was willing to make whatever it ended up costing her. She has held to it since, which takes considerably more spine than cynicism does.

She is stubborn, quick to forgive, and largely unbothered by people being sour at her. What does get to her is being underestimated. Wisp dislikes being handled and dislikes being treated as though she needs looking after, and will bristle at it even on the occasions when she probably does.

Wisp's Protector

Wisp knows the Greywood is dangerous. That's why she crosses it. Woodland creatures rely on her to guide them safely through the forest, keeping them away from the predators that hunt its paths. When a dragon decides Wisp is costing it too much easy prey, it wants her gone. An ancient law stands in its way. No guide who helps from the heart can be harmed while carrying out their duty. So the dragon finds other ways. A familiar trail leads somewhere it shouldn't. A safe crossing becomes a trap. An accident in the Greywood can hardly be blamed on anyone. Lycan notices. The solitary werewolf has spent years refusing responsibility for anyone but himself, yet he cannot ignore what the dragon is doing. Wisp refuses to stop guiding, leaving Lycan with a choice he never wanted. Walk away, or keep walking beside her long enough to discover why that choice is becoming harder to make.
